Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is meant for construction sites, where supplies have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The safe and correct use of rough terrain forklifts is essential to be able to guarantee the wellbeing of both the operator and other personnel at the work site.
Terrain
Even if these trucks are built for rough terrain, you still should be very careful so as to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, should only be operated on level ground.
Speed
Drivers of forklifts should always drive at a safe speed even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules governing the speed limitations of forklifts. Driving on uneven or rough terrain needs even more caution. Steering, in particular, can be risky at higher speeds.
Incline
If you are operating on an incline, you must keep the load on the machine's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Do not attempt to raise a load while operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity could cause the equipment to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in place. Depending upon the working environment, eye and hearing protection may need to be worn. Check that a functioning fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
Weather conditions can impact forklift operating conditions. Load handling, speed and turning might need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in rain, snow or ice.
