Counterbalance Forklift Training Programs
Anybody who operates a counterbalanced lift truck is required to have training, based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies. Training includes a combination of classroom training and hands-on driver training. Refresher training is necessary periodically in order to keep driver skills up to date. OSHA does not indicate a minimum time requirement for either the classroom or hands-on training.
Counterbalanced Forklifts
The counterbalance forklift is able to balance its cargo due to a counterbalance built into the truck. Forks could move down and up parallel to the truck's body. The forks do not pivot. Operators driving counterbalanced lift trucks should receive training about the specific forklifts they will be operating and in the same workplace setting.
Classroom Training Programs
In classroom training, the forklift operator will be taught about the model he or she would be operating. Information comprises specifications like load, height and weight capacity. The operator would learn the basics of fueling or charging the lift truck, that depends on whether the engine is gas-powered or battery-powered. Safety measures pertaining to the particular forklift, like for example how to safely walk around the lift truck, would be covered.
Supervised Driving
Driver training will be supervised to ensure that the driver will know how to properly drive the counterbalance forklift. This practical training program would occur in the same type of environment wherein the driver would be working. The operator will train on the same kind of terrain with the same types of surrounding buildings and other structures, as well as the same pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Refresher Training Courses
Counterbalance lift truck drivers are required by OSHA to take a regular refresher training program. However, there are no specifications as to the frequency at which an operator requires this training. However, for regular operators, refresher training programs has to consist of classroom-style training.
